Top 10 Opportunities to use signs with your baby.

1. Mealtime - Mealtime signs are often the first ones taught and with good reason. Mealtime is a very important part of every baby's day. And with three or more meals a day there are many opportunities to demonstrate signs.

2. Bath Time - Bath time is a favorite time for many kids. It's a time when parents are sitting by their baby's side which gives them a great opportunity to talk about what they are doing and teach signs for things like bubbles, duck, wash and fish.

3. Bed Time - Teaching bed time signs can help enforce a bed time routine. Routine is key to an easy bed time, signs can help prepare baby for what comes next.

4. At the Doctor - Another example of helping prepare your baby for what comes next. Teaching your baby signs for words like hurt, doctor and sick can help catch ear infections before they cause damage and alert parents to other ailments they might not otherwise see.

5. Park - The park is a place full of opportunities to learn about your child's likes and dislikes. Beyond the swings and slides there may be birds, squirrels, trees and flowers!

6. Reading - Signing and reading has so many benefits, but my favorite is how special the time spent is. The young age at which they can choose their favorite book and help you read it is priceless.

7. During Playgroup - With that many kids all playing there are bound to be a few tiffs. While I believe it's good to let them work it out themselves sometimes there are also those times when they need some help, especially if they aren't verbal yet. Teaching signs for words like share, sorry, please and thank you can save some tears and help teach life long lessons.

8. At Daycare - The use of signs in Daycare is VERY Beneficial. The signs serve as a universal language helping everyone feel understood and strengthening the child/caregiver bond.

9. During a special outing (Zoo, Aquarium) - When you take your child to a place they might not get to see every day or every week it's great to give them the words to tell other loved ones about their day. Teach signs for what they did or saw that day! You'll be amazed when you pull up to the Zoo in a couple weeks and your baby starts signing "elephant."

10. During an educational activity - Every activity a baby does is educational for them in some way. But for those times you sit down to work on colors, shapes and picture recognition signs can be a big help. You can help your baby expand their knowledge and vocabulary long before they have the verbal skills to actually say the words.

Well we are finally about settled into our new home in Salt Lake valley. Thought it was time to start getting Baby Signs going in the area and I finally have a few more moments of time to update this blog. Thanks for being so patient.

A funny story about my son and summer signs. For some reason he uses the sign for ice-cream to tell me he wants sunscreen. I guess they do sound very similiar, I just hope he doesn't think its just as yummy.

One of the most frequent questions I get is the following: “My baby is exposed to two languages at home. Won’t adding the Baby Signs Program just make her task more complicated by adding a third?”

To answer this question, let see what Dr. Linda Acredolo, a Child Development Expert and co-founder of the Baby Signs Program, has to say.

"The answer is a strong and resounding “No!” The truth is that, no matter what form bilingual input takes, adding signing to the mix actually makes the child’s job easier, not harder. Here’s why.

In a bilingual household, babies hear two words being used to label objects, and what they need to figure out is that both words are equally valid—in other words, that they mean the same thing. For example, if a baby hears both the word “leche” and the word “milk,” he or she needs to understand that the words are equivalent.

And that’s where signing becomes helpful. Quite simply, signs act as mediators between the languages, making the equivalence of words obvious to the baby. For example, when the baby hears “leche” from Mom and “milk” from Dad and both parents pair the word they say with the MILK sign, the parents are making the job of connecting the object with the meanings of both words much easier for babies.

In other words, rather than confusing your bilingual child, baby sign language will help smooth the road to understanding and speaking both spoken languages." Dr. Linda Acred0lo

I love this signing story that really is such a precious moment shared by a mother of a Baby Signs baby.
"Joshua, my third baby boy and third signer gave me such a special Mother's Day gift last year. A little over a year old and he was signing up a storm. He would use the sign for "Daddy" for any close family member, Mommy included. No matter how hard I tried he refused to sign "Mommy." He would just look at me and grin with that "I know what you want, but unless you agree to give me an unlimited supply of cookies you're not getting it." look.

Then on Mother's Day I tried again. I asked Joshua, "Can you sign 'Mommy'?" He looked at me and signed "Love Mommy." That child was instantly forgiven for all the sleepless nights and earned major brownie points for the future. He had the biggest smile full of pride on his face like he had been saving it up for just this day, this moment. He signed it over and over and used the sign for "Mommy" every day after that.

That Mother's Day will forever be one of my favorites. For my baby to be able to communicate so young and tell me he loves me; To see the pride and joy on his face because he made Mommy so happy is a gift I will cherish always." -Elizabeth Sprague

This was my son's first sign. He signed sleep at 10 months. I have learned that your baby's first sign can tell you alot about there personality and what they love. Its no coincidence my son's first sign was sleep. He loves to sleep! Another little girl's first sign was book. She is now older and she loves reading. Another little girl's first sign was milk, she breastfeed until she was 3.

Its amazing what signing can tell you about your child. It really is a window into there little mind.

We all know reading to our baby is important, helping them learn language while fine tuning many other skills. Fostering an early love of books is starting your child on the path to success. The quality snuggle time is an extra special bonus and has it's own list of benefits, like a secure and confident child.

Have you ever read a book with a signing baby? The benefits of reading skyrocket as baby can dive right into the story with you. Signing along to their favorite parts, pointing out their favorite characters and even telling you which book they want to read! The more words a baby hears the faster they learn to speak those words, repetition is key in a baby's learning process. By teaching your baby the signs in their favorite book and getting them involved in the story you are opening up a world of opportunity for conversations that just weren't there before.

"Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?" Where you might just turn the page to see what Brown Bear sees, if your baby signs "Bear" most parents will say "Yes! That's the bear. Do you like the bear? What color is the bear? The bear is brown. Should we turn the page and see what Brown Bear sees?" Do you see how many more times you might repeat the word for your baby if they get involved in the story? And a really proud moment will be when your baby signs what Brown Bear sees before you turn the page.

Research: Babies learn to speak sooner when using Signs.

I wanted to share with you a portion of the original research backing the Baby Signs Program.

When Dr. Acredelo and Goodwyn first started researching about teaching babies sign language, they asked the question many families ask. "Does using Sign language keep babies from learning to talk?"

To find out the answer to this question they began research at University of California, Davis backed by a grant through the National Institute of Health.

Through this extensive study they found the opposite to be true. Signing with you baby actually promotes them to speak sooner, not later. For example, 24 month olds signers were speaking like 28 month olds. Also, 36 month old signers were speaking more like 47 month old non-signers.

This prompted them to start the Baby Signs Program, which gives parents resources and classes to help there children learn to speak sooner through signing.

-If you're a parent, you probably remember the very first time your baby waved hello to you. Now, developmental experts say building on that simple gesture can help parents talk with their baby before the child actually says a word.
Doctors who've been studying the effects of teaching sign language to babies say the practice can improve the bond that exists between babies and their parents.
"What we know about infants in their very first years of life is, they're very frustrated because they can't communicate," said Dr. Linda Acredolo, co-founder of the Baby Signs Institute. "So by providing them with very simple signs, like the deaf community uses, we find that we can lower frustration and really make a bond that's warm and rich between parent and child."
